Who is this for?
Do you have any of these issues?
If that sounds like you, an assessment is the place to start.
How it Works
Your knee assessment includes:
Knee alignment and joint range assessment
Identifying which compartment is affected and whether unloading is appropriate
Ligament and stability checks where relevant
Confirming your osteoarthritis is unicompartmental — reviewing existing imaging, or advising whether a scan is needed before a brace is fitted
Discussion of your goals, activity level and daily life
A clear, honest recommendation — including whether a brace will help, and which one

The Evidence
What the research shows
Unloader bracing for osteoarthritis affecting one side of the knee has been studied across multiple clinical trials. The findings are encouraging for the right patient — though not universal, which is exactly why assessment matters.

Reduced pain and improved function — significant improvements in WOMAC pain, stiffness and function scores in patients using an unloader brace (Briggs et al., Journal of Knee Surgery, 2012).

Less reliance on medication — 35% of patients reported reduced use of prescription anti-inflammatories, and 31% reduced over-the-counter anti-inflammatories (Briggs et al., 2012).

Results vary between individuals and depend on the type and severity of your osteoarthritis.
Choose Wisely
An unloader brace works by applying a precise three-point force across the knee to shift load off the worn compartment. That only helps if your osteoarthritis is unicompartmental — affecting one side — and only if the device is the right type, correctly sized, and dialled in to the right offloading tension. The wrong brace, or the right brace fitted poorly, does little, and an unloader on the wrong knee pattern can be uncomfortable for no benefit. As a specialist orthotist, we confirm whether unloading is appropriate for your knee, choose the right device, and set it up correctly from day one.
